How far must the vent cap be from the gas meter, AC unit, or dryer vent?
The vent cap has to stay clear of all three, but the distances differ: typically at least 3 feet from a gas meter or regulator and its relief vent, and several feet from air intakes and dryer exhausts so lint, fumes, and intake air don't cross. Three different neighbors, three different rules
The vent cap has to keep its distance from all three, but the required clearances aren't the same. A gas meter or regulator typically wants the most respect — on the order of three feet — because a regulator has its own vent that can release gas, and you don't want a burner's exhaust or intake anywhere near that. Air-conditioning condensers, fresh-air intakes, and dryer vents each carry their own separation so you're not recirculating exhaust, pulling lint into the intake, or blasting the cap with an appliance's discharge. Your unit's manual and the fuel-gas code set the exact figures.
Why the meter clearance matters most
Of the three, the gas meter and regulator drive the most careful placement. That relief vent on the regulator is designed to release gas if pressure spikes, and putting a fireplace's live termination — with its intake and its warm exhaust — close to a potential gas source is exactly the hazard the clearance exists to prevent. On propane homes out in Fairview, Candler, and Brevard the same logic applies to the tank's regulator. We keep the cap well clear of any of it.
We read the whole wall, not just the fireplace spot
Here's the practical upshot: the fireplace can only go where the termination is legal, and the termination has to clear windows, doors, grade, decks, and every one of these appliances at once.
