How far does a vent termination have to be from a window or door?

Far enough that exhaust can't roll back inside — typically about a foot from an operable window or door for a standard direct-vent fireplace, though the exact clearance is set by your unit's manual and the fuel-gas code and grows with the appliance's BTU. We lay out the termination to hit every one of those distances before we cut the wall.

Keep exhaust away from anything that opens

A direct-vent termination has to sit far enough from operable windows and doors that exhaust can't drift back inside when they're open. For a typical residential gas fireplace that's on the order of a foot of clearance to an operable window or door — but "typical" is doing real work in that sentence. The exact distance is set by your specific unit's manual and the fuel-gas code, and it grows as the appliance's BTU input climbs. A big linear unit throws more exhaust than a small one and wants more room.

Why we map it before we cut

The clearance to windows and doors is only one of several the cap has to satisfy at once — height above grade, distance from the gas meter, distance from air intakes and dryer vents, clearance under decks and eaves. On a lot of walls those circles overlap, and the one spot that clears the window might be too close to the meter. So before we open the wall, we survey the whole exterior around the fireplace location and find the point that satisfies every distance in the manual simultaneously. That's the difference between a permitted, inspector-approved job and a callback.

Fixed windows and mountain layouts

Note that it's operable windows and doors that drive the rule — a fixed picture window that never opens is treated differently than a double-hung you crank open in spring. That distinction sometimes saves a tight layout in an older Asheville home where the fireplace wall is crowded with openings.
