It's a listed accessory, not optional. Installed correctly with the standoff and proper clearance, the siding stays fine.
Yes — and that's why the standoff exists
Direct-vent caps run hot, and vinyl siding is heat-sensitive — put the two together without protection and the siding can warp, buckle, or discolor. Manufacturers know this, so they make a vinyl-siding standoff (a heat shield that holds the cap off the wall and deflects the heat) a required, listed accessory whenever the termination sits on vinyl. It's not an upgrade or an optional add-on; if the wall is vinyl, the standoff goes on. Installed with the standoff and correct clearances, your siding is fine.
When you need it, when you don't
The standoff is about the cladding, not the fireplace. Vinyl and other heat-sensitive materials need it; brick, stone, or fiber-cement generally don't, because they shrug off the heat. We identify the siding type up front and spec the right termination hardware for it.
The failure we get called to fix
