How much does a chimney liner cost when installing a gas or wood insert?
Marshall's steep, tight lots make the liner as much an access question as a materials one. Homes built hard against the mountainside and the narrow multi-story buildings downtown often have offset flues and difficult roof access, and both can add a little labor to running a stainless liner the full height of the chimney. Sizing still follows the appliance; the terrain is the local wrinkle.
When the mountain complicates the flue
Marshall is built on slopes — houses cling to the hillsides and the revitalized downtown stacks up narrow and multi-story against the mountain. That geography shows up in chimneys: offsets where a flue had to dodge structure, tight runs, and steep or awkward roof access at the top. A stainless liner still goes the full height, but an offset flue has to be guided carefully past its bends, and a hard-to-reach roofline adds a bit of setup time. It's ordinary work — we do it constantly in the French Broad gorge towns — but it's the reason two Marshall chimneys can quote differently.
Damp gorge air and mixed fuel
The French Broad gorge keeps Marshall's evenings cool and damp, which is hard on dampers and flue interiors, so insulation on an exterior liner is often worth it here. Fuel runs mixed — natural gas in parts, propane on the more rural properties toward Walnut and up toward Hot Springs — and a propane insert needs its own orifices along with the liner. Either way we handle the fuel connection ourselves as a licensed gas contractor and pressure-test the line.
Permitted with Madison County
We pull the permit with Madison County and meet the inspector — permitted gas and hearth work protects your insurance and your home's sale. The insert, liner, cap, and labor come as one installed figure so nothing surprises you later. On steep access especially, get the flue measured before you compare bids — it's where estimates diverge.
