How much does a ventless gas fireplace cost?
In Flat Rock, many homes date to the 1800s with oversized open masonry fireplaces, so a ventless gas fireplace — landing at the lower end of the $3,500–$8,000 installed range — is often about warming up a grand old firebox that loses heat. The catch is fitting vent-free into a historic room within its rules.
A 19th-century firebox, a 21st-century burner
Flat Rock's historic homes came with big open hearths and clay flue liners that are now well past their prime, and those open fireboxes pull cold-air drafts into the room instead of heating it. A vent-free unit sidesteps the failing flue entirely — it seals a burner into the opening and keeps the heat in the room, and at 99.9 percent efficiency the Superior VRT4036 wastes almost none of its 40,000 BTU up a chimney. In a drafty historic home, that's a real change in comfort.
Respecting the house and the rules
Fitting a modern unit into a period room takes some care, and vent-free comes with its own conditions: it burns room air, so it has an oxygen-depletion sensor and a firm room-size Btu limit, it adds moisture to the house, and it's not permitted in bedrooms or bathrooms. Where a grand old room is simply too big for a single vent-free unit's rating, we'll tell you — sometimes a sealed direct-vent insert is the better fit for both the heat and the character.
