How often should a ventless gas fireplace be cleaned and inspected?

Once a year, late summer, for a ventless gas fireplace in Leicester. Out on the rural large-lot properties here, many homes run on propane, and vent-free sets appeal partly because they need no electricity to run, but that also means the oxygen sensor is the entire safety system, with no backup, so cleaning and testing it every year is essential.

No power required, and what that means

Leicester has plenty of rural properties on propane, and some remote homes with limited electrical capacity, so a vent-free fireplace that runs on a millivolt system with no electricity is genuinely useful here; it puts out heat when the grid can't help. The flip side is that there is nothing electric backing up the safety system. The oxygen depletion sensor, which shuts the gas off if room oxygen drops, is doing that job alone, and it has to be spotless and tested to be trusted. That is the case for the annual professional visit in a word.

Propane setup and cold valleys

On propane, a vent-free set has to be orificed and pressured for LP, which burns hotter than natural gas; get it wrong and it soots, with no chimney to carry it off. Leicester's rural valleys also drain cold air, running 5 to 8 degrees colder than Asheville on clear winter nights, so the fireplace works harder and fouls faster. Our annual visit confirms the propane setup, cleans and tests the sensor, vacuums the burner, and reads the flame. Call (828) 545-0525; we are 15 minutes west of our Asheville showroom.

Wood heat is common here, too

A lot of Leicester leans on wood heat, and if you run both a wood stove and a vent-free gas set, remember they need very different care; the vent-free unit has no creosote to sweep, but its sensor and moisture rules are its own. Between annual visits, dust the visible logs if you burn often; leave the sensor and gas checks to our NFI-certified techs.
