How often should vented gas logs be serviced?
Once a year, before the heating season. Vented gas logs are decorative — a tall, realistic flame with the damper open, most heat going up the chimney — but the burner, pilot, and gas connections still need annual cleaning and a safety check. And because the damper stays open, the chimney itself should be inspected too.
Ambiance still runs on gas
Vented gas logs are the closest gas comes to a real wood fire — a big yellow flame you run with the damper open. They're built for looks, not efficiency, so most of the heat goes up the flue. But "decorative" only describes the flame, not the plumbing: there's still a burner, a pilot or igniter, a gas valve, and connections that all need annual cleaning and testing. Don't forget the flue
Because vented logs run with the damper open and vent up a masonry or factory chimney, that chimney is part of the system. Even though gas burns far cleaner than wood, the flue still needs periodic inspection — for blockages, animal nests, a failing damper, or a deteriorating liner. A vented log set that won't draft properly can spill combustion byproducts into the room, so the inspection matters.
