For Brevard, once a year — and in one of the wettest corners of the mountains, the flue and dampers earn extra scrutiny. With 80-plus inches of rain a year rusting metal and spalling brick, the annual service on a vented log set here is as much about the moisture-beaten chimney it vents through as the burner and pilot themselves.
Rain is the enemy of an open flue
Brevard's rainfall cracks crowns, spalls brick, and rusts dampers faster than drier towns see, and that's a problem for vented logs specifically, because they run with the damper open and vent up the chimney. A rusted-through damper that won't seat, a crown letting water into the liner, moisture pooling in a chimney chase — all of it undermines the draft your log set depends on. We inspect the flue, cap, and damper closely during service, especially after the wet March-to-June stretch.
Propane logs need their own check
Out toward Connestee Falls, Sherwood Forest, and the cabins, many Brevard homes run on propane rather than a gas main — and a propane vented log set uses different orifices and pressures than a natural-gas one. As a licensed gas contractor, we verify the set is configured for LP, check the regulator and appliance-side pressure, and confirm the connections are tight. A propane set with the wrong orifice sooties the logs and dulls the finish, so we watch for that too. The tank stays with your propane supplier; the burner, valve, and log positioning are ours.
Transylvania County timing
Schedule before heating season while the weather's dry and the calendar's open.
