How often should vented gas logs be serviced?
In Flat Rock, once a year — and in a village of 1800s homes, the aging chimney matters as much as the logs. These historic houses came with oversized open masonry fireplaces and clay flue liners that have had well over a century to deteriorate, so the annual vented-log service here leans hard on inspecting the flue the open damper vents through.
Grand old fireboxes, original flues
Historic Flat Rock's homes were built around big open masonry hearths, and many now hold a vented gas log set for the look without the woodpile. It's a handsome pairing — a tall, realistic flame filling a grand old firebox — but those fireboxes vent through original clay-tile liners that spall, crack, and shed with age. Because vented logs run damper-open, a failing liner isn't cosmetic; it's the safety path for combustion byproducts, and it's the first thing we assess.
Preserving character without the draft
The trade-off with these old open hearths is draft: they pull cold air into the room, and a tired damper makes it worse. During service we clean and reseat the logs, service the burner and pilot, test the natural-gas connections, and check whether the damper still seats and the liner still drafts. If the old flue is past saving, we'll tell you honestly and lay out options — no pressure to over-buy. A sealed insert can fix the draftiness if you ever want real warmth from these boxes, but that's a separate conversation.
Henderson County, ahead of winter
Book in late summer while the calendar's open and the weather cooperates. Flat Rock is about 30 minutes south of the Asheville showroom, and we cover Kanuga and Highland Lake on the same Henderson County runs. Vented logs are decorative-first here, and that's fine — the yearly visit is about keeping a beautiful old fireplace safe, not selling you a heater. Any gas-line work gets a permit pulled with the county and an inspector on-site. Call (828) 545-0525.
