How often should a wood stove chimney be swept?
For an Asheville wood stove, once a year is the minimum, and a stove you lean on all winter usually earns a second sweep by midwinter. Two kinds of Asheville flue
A wood stove in a Montford or North Asheville home is usually venting through original masonry — a brick chimney built a century ago for open fires, then fitted with a liner when the stove was added. Those liners run cooler near the top and glaze over faster than owners expect. The newer South Asheville builds lean on insulated stainless Class A pipe, which holds its heat and fouls a bit slower. Neither is maintenance-free, and we inspect both the same way each fall — camera up the flue, measure the buildup, sweep if it has reached the eighth-inch line that chimney pros treat as the limit.

Elevation keeps Asheville nights down in the 20s well into early spring, so a stove here burns later in the season than one in the Piedmont. Every extra cold evening is more slow, damped-down burning, and that low-and-cool fire is what condenses creosote onto the flue walls. Burn unseasoned wood — common when a cold snap arrives before the woodpile is ready — and the interval shortens again. If the stove is your primary heat, we would check it at the season's midpoint rather than wait a full year.
