How often should a wood stove chimney be swept?

For a Brevard wood stove, once a year is the minimum and mid-season is smart for a daily heater — but here the bigger story is water. Transylvania County gets 80-plus inches of rain a year, and that moisture works on your chimney every bit as hard as creosote. Inspect and sweep annually, sooner if the stove runs constantly.

Rain and creosote, together

Brevard's rainfall is the highest of almost anywhere we serve, and it cracks crowns, spalls brick, and rusts dampers and caps from the outside while creosote builds on the inside. The two problems feed each other: water gets into a flue through a failed crown or an uncapped top, mixes with creosote, and turns it into a hard, acidic glaze that clings to the walls and eats at the masonry. Downtown homes and the cabins out toward Connestee Falls and Pisgah Forest often have chimney chases and crawl spaces that stay damp for weeks in the March-to-June wet season, which is why our inspection looks at the whole system — cap, crown, and liner — not just the soot level.

Wood and propane country

Out here wood heat and propane do the work that natural gas does closer to Asheville, so the stove is often the real furnace rather than a backup — and a stove that heats the house builds creosote faster than one lit for ambiance. If you damp it down for long overnight burns, expect to reach the eighth-inch cleaning threshold before spring. Seasoning your wood under cover, away from that constant rain, is one of the few things that genuinely slows the buildup.

If we find moisture damage

When a sweep uncovers a rusted-out damper, a cracked crown, or a liner the water has gotten into, the repair is where the licensed side of our work comes in — and any relining or reset stove is permitted through Transylvania County and inspected. We are about 40 minutes southwest of the showroom. Call (828) 545-0525 and we'll schedule the inspection before wet season turns into heating season.
