How often should a wood stove chimney be swept?
In Flat Rock, wood stove chimneys deserve a yearly sweep at minimum, and the reason is the housing stock: many homes here date to the 1800s, with oversized open masonry fireplaces and clay flue liners that are simply old. A stove venting into an aging, oversized flue collects creosote faster, so annual inspection is non-negotiable.
Old chimneys, real character, real wear
Historic Flat Rock's homes were built around big open hearths and tall masonry chimneys, and a lot of those flues still have their original clay tile liners — decades or more than a century of heating cycles, settling, and weather behind them. When a wood stove or insert gets added to a chimney like that, the flue is usually far larger than the stove needs, so exhaust cools as it rises and drops creosote well before it reaches the top. Aging clay tiles also crack and spall, and creosote loves a rough, cracked surface. None of that means you should tear out the character of the house — it means the flue needs eyes on it every year so small problems stay small.

Those oversized old hearths are notorious for pulling cold air into the room instead of drawing exhaust cleanly up and out, and poor draft is another creosote accelerant — smoke that lingers and cools leaves more residue behind. A correctly sized stainless liner solves the draft and the buildup at once, which is a common recommendation the annual inspection produces here. Until then, a stove run most evenings through the cool Henderson County season can reach the eighth-inch cleaning point by midwinter.
