How often should the ember material in a gas fireplace be replaced?
There's no fixed calendar — glowing embers are replaced when they stop glowing well, which for most homes is every three to five years. The mineral fibers don't burn away, but they mat down, collect dust and soot, and discolor gray over time. Once they're packed or dirty they glow dull and can start sooting, so we refresh them as needed during annual service.
Judge by how they look, not the date
The ember bed is a wear item you replace on condition, not on schedule. New fibers are bright and airy and light up orange the second the burner catches. After several seasons they compress, trap dust and the fine carbon every flame throws off, and go gray. When the coal-bed glow has gone flat while the flame itself still looks fine, that's the fibers telling you they're done — usually every three to five years for a set run a few evenings a week.
What speeds it up
A few things age embers faster. A dusty house, pets, or a fireplace that sat open all summer collecting lint will load the fibers quicker. So will over-packing them — a thick bed smothers the flame, sooties fast, and needs replacing sooner. Vent-free sets can foul embers faster too, because everything the flame produces stays right there at the burner instead of going up a flue. Do it right, with the right material
Ember replacement is inexpensive, but two rules matter. Use only the manufacturer's specified ember material for your set — the fibers are engineered and certified for that burner, and generic stuffing is a soot-and-safety gamble. And replace, don't just add, so the bed doesn't grow too thick.
