I just bought a house with a gas fireplace that doesn't work and there's no manual — how do I figure out what's wrong?
In Candler the honest first step is reading the fuel off the rating plate, because it cuts both ways here — the newer Enka-Candler subdivisions have natural gas, but plenty of Candler runs on propane. NG or LP changes everything about what you check and what parts fit. Confirm the fuel, then the shutoff, switch, and batteries. And know that a basic builder firebox may be low-heat by design.
Natural gas or propane? Read the plate
Candler doesn't fit neatly into one fuel. The fast-growing new subdivisions off Enka often tie into natural-gas mains, while much of the rest of Candler and the surrounding rural pockets runs on propane tanks. With an unknown-history house you can't assume, so the metal rating plate's NG or LP marking is genuinely your first move.
If it's propane, check the tank gauge and service valve too, since a shut-off tank on a vacant home looks exactly like a broken fireplace. If the plate's fuel and the fuel at the house disagree, someone converted the unit, and the orifice has to match — worth telling us before you run it.
Decorative by design, or actually broken?
A lot of Candler's newer homes came with a basic, decorative builder-grade firebox that was never meant to throw much heat — so 'it doesn't work' sometimes means 'it was never a real heater,' and owners here often upgrade within a few years. That's a comfort upgrade, though, never a hard sell.
