Reading Your Home's Vintage

An original brick firebox in a 1920s Montford four-square that someone later converted to gas will have either a decorative vented log set — lit with a key valve in the floor or wall — or a sealed insert slid into the old opening, with its metal rating plate tucked behind the louver or control door. South Asheville's newer construction leans toward clean-face direct-vent units that light from a wall switch or remote. Pin down which you have before you touch a knob; the starting steps are completely different.
Natural Gas, but Confirm It on the Plate
