In Brevard, moisture is the wild card. With 80-plus inches of rain a year, an idle fireplace's pilot assembly, valve, and rating plate can sit in a damp firebox and corrode. Start by finding that plate — behind the lower louver, inside the control door, or along the firebox floor — to confirm the brand, model, and whether you're on natural gas or propane.
Damp Is Hard on the Guts
Brevard's chimney chases and crawl spaces are especially prone to moisture, and that reaches the part of the fireplace you're about to operate. A pilot orifice, thermocouple, or gas valve that's spent an off-season in humid air can be sluggish or rusted, and the rating plate itself sometimes corrodes to the point you can barely read it. So when you pull the louver, you're not just hunting the model number — you're getting a first look at whether damp has gotten into the works. If it's rough in there, that's a reason to have us check it, not to force a light.
Downtown Gas, Cabin Propane
Fuel here is split. Homes in and around downtown Brevard may run natural gas, while the cabins out toward Connestee Falls, Sherwood Forest, and the Pisgah edges are propane country. The plate settles it — and it has to, because a propane appliance and a natural-gas one use different orifices and pressures, and mixing them soots the burner. On a mountain cabin that's been sitting, confirming the fuel before the first fire isn't optional. Waterproofing the chimney top is a separate conversation, but the fuel question comes first.
