Prefab chases nest differently than masonry
A factory-built fireplace runs its pipe up through a framed, sided chase capped with a sheet-metal chase cover. When that cover corrodes or its seams open — common on units now thirty years old around the Airport Road and Cane Creek subdivisions — birds and squirrels get into the chase cavity around the pipe. That's a nest sitting against wood framing and a metal pipe that gets hot, which is a fire concern the classic masonry-flue picture doesn't capture. It also fouls the pipe's draft, and a choked prefab gas unit makes carbon monoxide.
This is a natural-gas town, so mind the CO
