Vented gas logs are built to burn with the flue open; that's what gives their tall yellow flame the look of a real wood fire, and it's what carries the byproducts out. If the damper is closed or restricted, that same odor lingers, soot forms, and you lose the safe path for exhaust. This is the opposite of a ventless set, which is designed to burn closed and relies on an oxygen-depletion sensor instead. Know which one you have, and burn it the way it was designed.
When the smell isn't just dust
