Is it safe to burn wood or add gas logs in an old coal-burning fireplace?

In Sylva, coal-era fireboxes show up in the historic Dillsboro homes — small, shallow openings on older masonry chimneys that river-valley damp has been working on for decades. Burning wood in one usually smokes and overheats fragile brick. After a Level 2 inspection, a properly connected gas log set or sealed insert is the safer path for these Jackson County hearths.

19th-century Dillsboro, coal-sized boxes

Dillsboro's compact 19th-century cottages carry some of the oldest fireboxes in the area, many built for coal and fronted by flue liners well past their prime. The Tuckasegee valley's cold-air drainage and river moisture rust dampers and degrade those liners fast — faster than owners expect — and the corrosive residue inside an unlined coal flue speeds the decay. A wood fire in that setup smokes and pushes heat into brick that's already compromised, so a Level 2 camera inspection is non-negotiable here.

Fuel and the licensed connection

Sylva is mixed-fuel — natural gas in parts of town, propane out toward Cullowhee and Balsam — so the gas-log path depends on what serves your house, and either way the connection is licensed work a showroom or mason can't legally make. We permit the line with Jackson County, pressure-test it, and meet the inspector. A Real Fyre vented set gives the realistic flame these historic rooms want, once the chimney's verified and usually lined.

Worth the trip to measure

We're 50 minutes west of our Asheville showroom, so we bundle the inspection and gas work efficiently. Many coal boxes are too small for a safe wood fire or an EPA insert; we measure at a free assessment and tell you honestly. Call (828) 545-0525.
