A drafty open firebox is the wrong tool

The open masonry fireplaces common in Arden's Royal Pines and Skyland neighborhoods lose more heat up the flue than they put in the room — fine for an evening fire, useless for holding a low thermostat setback in a house nobody's in, and not something you'd run unattended anyway. A sealed gas insert with a proper liner, or a direct-vent unit, fixes that: it holds a setback and keeps the pipes above freezing while you're away. Arden's on the natural-gas mains, so no tank runs dry.

Sealed, grid-optional, and watched

A direct-vent unit breathes and exhausts through a sealed pipe, so it runs safely with no one home, and a millivolt Valor H5 keeps radiating heat when a storm takes the power — the outage is exactly when unattended pipes freeze, so grid-optional heat is the point. Skip vent-free logs in a closed-up house; the moisture they add becomes a spring mold problem. Electric is out for the same outage reason. We pull the Buncombe County permit and pressure-test the line.

The insert is the backstop — pair it with a WiFi temperature sensor, working CO and smoke detection, and a neighbor who checks after storms.
