Is it safe to use a gas fireplace for freeze protection in an unoccupied vacation home?

In Black Mountain, yes with a caveat the forecast won't tell you: Swannanoa Valley inversions routinely leave mornings 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville, so an empty house here drops further than you'd plan for. Set a sealed direct-vent unit's thermostat with that margin, and layer monitoring behind it.

Set the thermostat for the inversion, not the forecast

Cold air pools in the Swannanoa Valley, and late frost dates run past Asheville's, so a house sitting empty in Black Mountain or up in Montreat can be well below the valley reading on a clear morning. That's an argument for a slightly higher setback and a unit that can actually hold it — a direct-vent gas fireplace rated for thermostat control. Black Mountain is on the natural-gas mains, so there's no tank to run dry; for grid-down nights a Valor H5 keeps radiating with no electronics, the power-optional heat that earned its keep during Helene.

The wrong choices, and the check-ins

Montreat's heavily wooded lots keep houses cool, shaded, and moisture-prone, which is why vent-free logs are the wrong call for an unoccupied home here — they add water vapor to an already-damp, closed-up house and invite mold. A sealed direct-vent unit adds none. Electric is out too, since an outage is precisely when the pipes are at risk. Whatever we install, we permit with Buncombe County and pressure-test the gas line.

The fireplace is the backstop, not the whole system — add a WiFi thermometer texting your phone, working CO and smoke alarms, and someone checking the house after storms. Service it every fall, since the off-season pilot collects spiders and dust and quits when you need it in January; tune-ups start from $189. We're only 15 minutes east of the showroom.
