Is it safe to use a gas fireplace for freeze protection in an unoccupied vacation home?

In Brevard it can be, but two local realities shape it: you're in propane country, so the tank matters as much as the flame, and 80-plus inches of annual rain means moisture is already working on your chimney. A sealed direct-vent propane unit on a thermostat fits an empty cabin — vent-free does not.

The tank is half the job

Most Brevard cabins and downtown homes run on propane, not a gas main, so freeze protection is only as good as the fuel behind it — a fireplace can't burn what isn't in the tank. Keep your supplier's keep-full schedule current before you leave, especially heading into a stretch away. A Kozy Heat Springfield 36 or a Valor H5 is the kind of sealed, direct-vent propane unit suited to holding a low setback; the Valor's millivolt design also keeps heating with the power out, which the Transylvania mountains see plenty of.

Wet county, closed-up house

Brevard's rainfall — worst March through June — cracks crowns, spalls brick, and rusts dampers, and the chimney chases and crawl spaces here take moisture damage first. That's a strong reason to avoid vent-free logs in an unoccupied home: they release water vapor into a sealed house that's already fighting damp, and you come back to mold. Direct-vent sealed combustion adds no indoor moisture. Electric is out for the obvious reason — outages are when pipes freeze. We pull the Transylvania County permit and pressure-test every line.

Layer and monitor

Treat the fireplace as one layer: add a WiFi temperature sensor, working CO and smoke detection, and a neighbor or caretaker who checks the cabin after storms. Service it every fall — spiders and dust clog the pilot over the off-season, and that's the failure that leaves a house cold; a tune-up starts from $189. We're about 40 minutes southwest of our Asheville showroom. Call (828) 545-0525 and we'll spec a unit rated for the duty.
