Is propane or natural gas better for the environment?

Both are clean-burning fossil fuels, and the difference is small. Natural gas edges propane slightly on carbon dioxide at the burner, but natural gas is methane — a potent greenhouse gas when it leaks upstream. Propane isn't a greenhouse gas if it escapes unburned. For local air quality, both burn far cleaner than wood.

Two clean fuels, two different footprints

Both propane and natural gas are fossil fuels, so neither is carbon-free — but both are dramatically cleaner at the point of use than a wood fire, with almost no particulate smoke, no ash, and no creosote. On the climate side, the picture is a wash with tradeoffs. Natural gas releases a hair less carbon dioxide per unit of heat, so at the burner it looks marginally better. The catch is what happens before it reaches you: natural gas is essentially methane, and methane that leaks from wells, pipelines, and mains is a far stronger greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Propane is a heavier molecule that doesn't trap heat the same way — if it escapes unburned, it isn't the climate problem methane is.

What actually decides it in WNC

Here in the mountains, the choice usually isn't made on a spreadsheet — it's made by geography. Natural gas runs along the Asheville and Hendersonville mains, out through Fletcher and Arden. Get out to Fairview, Candler, Brevard, and the cabins tucked up our mountain roads, and there's no main to tie into — it's propane or nothing. If a gas line is available at your street, natural gas is usually cheaper to run over the years and you never schedule a delivery. If you're rural, propane gives you the same clean flame from a tank. Propane also burns hotter per unit, which is why we set different orifices and pressures — the wrong setup soots and wastes fuel, its own small environmental cost.

The bigger green lever

Honestly, propane-versus-natural-gas is a rounding error next to the appliance you put it in and the fuel you'd otherwise burn. Swapping an open wood fireplace — which can run a net heat loss and throws real smoke — for a sealed direct-vent gas unit is a far bigger air-quality and efficiency gain than fussing over which gas.
