Wood is a renewable, locally sourced fuel that runs on the natural carbon cycle, but an open wood fire is the dirtiest for the air right around your home, throwing off PM2.5 fine particulate. Gas — natural gas or propane — is a fossil fuel that emits carbon dioxide, but it burns remarkably cleanly and efficiently, with almost no particulate.
It comes down to what you're optimizing for
If your top concern is local air quality — your own lungs, your neighbors, a mountain cove where smoke lingers — a sealed gas or an electric unit beats an open wood fire handily. If it's carbon and renewability, sustainably harvested wood burned in a modern EPA-certified stove makes a strong case, since the carbon it releases is part of a cycle a fossil kilowatt isn't. If it's simply "nothing coming out in my house," electric is unbeatable, with the asterisk that the emissions moved upstream. There's no cheating your way to a choice that wins every category.
