Outdoor fireplace or fire pit — which is better for my patio design?
In Brevard, where 80-plus inches of rain a year cracks crowns and spalls brick, the smarter question is which fire feature survives the wet — and both can, if built for it. A fire pit is simpler, more social, and lower-cost; an outdoor fireplace is a bigger masonry mass that needs real waterproofing and a stainless cap. Out at the cabins on propane, either one runs fine.
Rain is the deciding factor here
Transylvania's rainfall is hard on anything built of stone and mortar, and a tall fireplace chase is simply more surface to keep sealed than a compact pit. Brevard's crawl spaces and chimney chases are already prone to moisture damage, and the wet season from March through June rusts dampers and works at the brick. If you love the fireplace look — and on a mountain-modern home it makes a genuine centerpiece — plan for waterproofing, proper flashing, quality materials, and a stainless cap from the start. A gas fire pit or fire table simply sheds weather with less to maintain over the years.
Propane country, done right
Much of Brevard and the surrounding cabins run on propane rather than a gas main. Propane needs its own orifices and pressures, so we set the regulator, run the piping, and configure the appliance for LP, coordinating the tank itself with your propane supplier. Set correctly for the fuel, a propane fire pit or fireplace lights just as clean and instant as one on natural gas — and we confirm your setup before specifying a thing.
Permit with Transylvania County
The gas line for an outdoor feature is licensed work, so we pull the permit with Transylvania County, pressure-test the buried, outdoor-rated line, and meet the inspector — the paperwork that protects your home sale and your insurance. We're 40 minutes southwest of our Emma Road showroom, so we plan the visit to make the trip count. Call (828) 545-0525 for a free design consultation.
