What are Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 chimney inspections?

In Arden, the most common fireplace project — dropping a sealed insert into a tired open masonry fireplace — is exactly what moves you from a routine inspection to a Level 2. NFPA 211's three tiers are a Level 1 yearly check, a Level 2 camera scan when the appliance changes, and an invasive Level 3. Adding that insert is an appliance change, so the middle tier applies.

From drafty firebox to real heater

The 1980s and 90s homes in Royal Pines, Skyland, and around Arden mostly came with open masonry fireplaces that pull heat out of the room and send it up the flue. The fix owners reach for is a sealed gas insert, which turns that draft into an efficient, power-optional heater. Because you're installing a new appliance into an existing chimney, NFPA 211 calls for a Level 2 — a camera scan of the flue and a correctly sized liner sleeved down it — not just a routine look. That scan also confirms the old masonry can host the insert safely.

The licensed-gas piece

Every one of those insert conversions needs a gas line brought to the firebox, and in North Carolina that's licensed work. A furniture showroom or a mason can sell you a beautiful insert, but they legally can't connect it to fuel — we can, and we permit the line through Buncombe County and pressure-test it. That single accountable path, from the Level 2 scan to the liner to the certified gas connection, is the difference between a job done right and one stitched across three trades.

The routine and the rare

Once an Arden insert or gas fireplace is in and running unchanged, it drops back to yearly Level 1 checks. A Level 2 also applies at a home sale or after an event; a Level 3, which opens concealed structure, stays rare and only for real hidden hazards.
