What are Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 chimney inspections?
Brevard gets more than 80 inches of rain a year, and water is what most often decides which inspection level your chimney needs. NFPA 211 sets three: a Level 1 annual look, a Level 2 that adds a camera scan for changes and post-event checks, and a Level 3 for concealed damage. In Transylvania County's wet climate, moisture hidden inside a crown or chase is the classic reason to move past a Level 1.
Water is the local variable
That 80-plus inches of rain, heaviest March through June, works on a chimney from the outside in. Crowns crack, brick faces spall, and dampers rust — and the damage that matters most happens where you can't see it, inside the chase and behind the crown. A Level 1 checks the readily accessible parts, but on a Brevard home showing water stains, a musty firebox, or a corroded damper, the camera scan of a Level 2 is what actually finds a moisture-cracked liner before it becomes a safety problem.
Propane country adds its own trigger
Brevard sits in propane territory, and plenty of downtown homes and mountain cabins here have converted an old wood fireplace to a clean propane insert or added a sealed unit. Any of those fuel or appliance changes calls for a Level 2 on top of the routine check — a fresh video look at the flue and a correctly sized liner, with the propane connection set to the right orifices and pressure and permitted through Transylvania County. Get the wrong-fuel setup wrong and it soots; done right by a licensed gas contractor, it's power-optional heat.
When it becomes a Level 3
When a scan turns up serious hidden damage — a chase soaked and rotted, a cracked liner behind a wall — a Level 3 authorizes opening those concealed sections to reach it.
