What are Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 chimney inspections?
Flat Rock has some of the oldest housing stock we serve — homes dating to the 1800s with oversized open masonry fireplaces and aging clay flue liners — and that age is what most often decides your inspection level. NFPA 211 defines three: a routine Level 1, a Level 2 camera scan, and an invasive Level 3. On a nineteenth-century chimney, the middle tier's video look frequently earns its place.
Old flues hide their problems
An oversized open masonry fireplace from the 1800s has a lot of chimney the eye can't reach: tall smoke chambers, hand-laid brick, and clay liner tiles that have expanded and contracted through more than a century of fires. Cracks, gaps, and deteriorated mortar in those liners rarely announce themselves at the hearth. A Level 1 covers the accessible parts, but on a historic Flat Rock home the camera scan of a Level 2 is what actually documents the liner's true condition — and on chimneys this old, that scan often finds something worth knowing about.
The draft fix that triggers a Level 2
Those grand open hearths pull cold air straight into the room and send most of their heat up the flue. Many Flat Rock owners solve the draftiness with a sealed gas insert, which preserves the historic firebox's look while turning it into a real, efficient heater. Because that's a new appliance in an old flue, NFPA 211 requires the Level 2 scan and a correctly sized liner, and any gas line we run is permitted through Henderson County and pressure-tested.
When a Level 3 is warranted
On the rare occasion a scan reveals a hidden hazard — a cracked liner behind a wall or a compromised chimney structure — a Level 3 opens those concealed sections to reach it.
