Many Backgrounds. One Standard.
Marshall, North Carolina

What are Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 chimney inspections?

In Marshall, where houses cling to steep hillsides and the downtown is built narrow against the mountainside, tight chimney geometry and draft are often what an inspection has to sort out. NFPA 211 defines three levels — a routine Level 1, a Level 2 with a camera scan, and an invasive Level 3 — and the constrained flue runs common here make the middle tier's video look especially useful.

Tight lots, tricky draft

Marshall's steep, cramped building sites push chimneys into short offsets and awkward routing, and in the French Broad gorge the cool, damp evening air and surrounding ridges can work against a good draw. When a fireplace smokes back into the room or struggles to light, a Level 1's accessible check is the starting point — but seeing why often means the camera scan of a Level 2, which reveals the flue's full interior geometry, any obstruction, and where a liner narrows or steps. On complicated chimney runs, that view is worth having.

The standard reasons still apply

Beyond the terrain, Marshall chimneys follow the same rules as anywhere: a Level 1 is the right yearly check for a system in normal use, and a Level 2 becomes mandatory when you buy or sell, change fuel or appliance, or the chimney comes through an event like a chimney fire or hard storm. A Level 3, which opens concealed structure to reach a hidden hazard, stays rare and is reserved for genuine safety concerns, never a fishing expedition.
