What are Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 chimney inspections?

Out in Mills River, where many homes run on propane rather than a gas main, the inspection level you need often follows a fuel or appliance change. NFPA 211 sets three tiers: a Level 1 yearly check, a Level 2 camera scan when something changes or a sale is pending, and a Level 3 for concealed hazards. Adding or converting a propane hearth is precisely the change that calls for a Level 2.

Propane, conversions, and the middle tier

Mills River's rural large-lot properties and newer developments sit in propane country, and a lot of the work out here is a conversion — an old wood firebox to a clean propane insert, or a new sealed unit in a room that never had one. Any of those changes the appliance, and NFPA 211 calls for a Level 2 at that point: a camera scan of the flue's full interior plus a correctly sized liner. On the propane side, we set the right orifices and pressure, connect and pressure-test the line, and permit it through Henderson County — licensed gas work a showroom or landscaper legally can't do.

The routine years in between

Once a propane fireplace is installed and running unchanged, it settles into the Level 1 rhythm — a yearly look at the accessible venting, the connection, and the appliance, ideally in late summer before the cool valley evenings set in. That annual check is the right level as long as nothing about the system has changed and it's given you no trouble.

Outdoor features and the rare Level 3

Mills River's open valley is made for outdoor living, and the gas fire pits and outdoor fireplaces we install get their own commissioning and gas check rather than a chimney level. Indoors, a Level 3 — opening concealed structure to reach hidden damage — stays rare and reserved for real hazards a scan turns up. Twenty-five minutes south of our showroom, we cover Mills River regularly. Call (828) 545-0525.
