What does a chimney sweep actually do during a cleaning?

In Black Mountain, a sweep does more than clear creosote — the heavily wooded lots around Montreat and the Swannanoa Valley drop leaves, twigs, and nests onto and into chimneys, so we brush the flue clean and pull out the summer's debris too. With valley inversions running mornings 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville, these hearths work hard.

Trees and critters, not just soot

Montreat's shaded, moisture-prone lots keep houses cool and canopy-covered, and that canopy has a way of ending up in your chimney — leaf litter on the cap, twigs in the flue, and the occasional bird or squirrel that moved in while the fireplace sat idle over summer. A real sweep clears all of it. We seal the firebox, run a sealed HEPA vacuum at the hearth, brush the liner and smoke shelf, and make sure the cap screen is intact so the next round of wildlife stays out. Debris and nests block draft as surely as heavy creosote does, and blocked draft is a common reason a fireplace suddenly smokes back into the room.

Cold mornings mean long fires

The Swannanoa Valley traps cold air, and temperature inversions can leave Black Mountain mornings a good 10 to 15 degrees below Asheville with frost lingering into late spring. Homes here answer that with steady fires, and steady fires lay down creosote — the flammable, tarry residue a sweep exists to remove. Once a year, late summer or early fall, keeps it from building into the glazed layer that feeds a chimney fire. We're just 15 minutes east of our Asheville showroom, so we're quick to reach the Swannanoa Valley.

Gas units get a different look

Plenty of Black Mountain homes run natural gas; a sealed gas fireplace never needs a wood sweep, only an annual service and a vent check. Tell us your setup at (828) 545-0525 and we'll send the right visit — sweep, inspection, or both.
