What does a chimney sweep actually do during a cleaning?

In Fairview, the sweep is all about wood and creosote: the large wooded lots here make wood heat the natural choice, and creosote buildup is the leading cause of chimney fires when a fall sweep gets skipped. Many homes run propane too. We brush the flue clean from cap to firebox, clear the smoke shelf and damper, and vacuum it out.

Wooded lots, wood fires, real creosote

Fairview's wooded acreage — up Cane Creek and Garren Creek and along the Charlotte Highway — practically hands you firewood, and steady stove and insert use is the norm. The trade-off is creosote: burning wood always leaves a sticky, flammable deposit on the flue wall, and here it's the number-one reason a chimney catches fire. A fall sweep is the fix — we seal the firebox, vacuum at the hearth with a sealed HEPA system, and brush the liner, smoke shelf, and connector until the flammable buildup is gone. In wood country, an annual sweep isn't optional maintenance — it's fire prevention.

Propane and the rest of the check

Plenty of Fairview homes are on propane rather than a gas main, and a sealed propane fireplace gets a service and vent inspection, not a wood-style sweep. Whatever the fuel, the sweep is also a checkup: we read the liner for cracks, the crown and cap for damage, and pull out any nests animals left over the summer. On a wooded lot, that debris and an intact spark-arrestor screen matter — falling leaves and twigs love a chimney cap.
