What does a chimney sweep actually do during a cleaning?

In Flat Rock, the sweep is shaped by the housing: many homes here date to the 1800s, built with oversized open masonry fireplaces and clay flue liners now well past their prime. Those big old flues collect more soot and creosote than a modern firebox, so we brush the full height and read every foot of that aging liner as we go.

Big old flues, aging liners

Historic Flat Rock's oversized open hearths were built to burn a lot of wood, and their tall masonry flues hold correspondingly more — more surface for creosote to cling to, more smoke shelf and damper to clear. We seal the opening, run a sealed HEPA vacuum at the hearth so a century's worth of soot doesn't drift into a period room, and brush the liner from the cap down. The catch is the clay tile: decades of heat and weather crack and shift those liners, and a sweep is where that damage shows itself. In a house this old, that read is worth as much as the cleaning.

Drafty by design, fixable without losing character

Those grand open fireplaces pull cold air straight down into the room when they're not lit — one reason old Flat Rock houses feel drafty. A sealed insert with a properly sized liner fixes that while keeping the original mantel and surround, and when a sweep reveals a liner too far gone, that conversion is often the honest next step. Relining and any gas connection is licensed work we permit through Henderson County and pressure-test — a mason can build you a beautiful firebox but can't legally connect it to fuel.
