What does a chimney sweep actually do during a cleaning?

In Maggie Valley, a sweep is really pre-season insurance for a rental: these cabins and vacation homes sit idle for weeks, then have to light instantly and safely the night a guest checks in. So we clear the flue of creosote, pull out any summer nests and debris, and confirm it's ready before renters ever strike a match. At 3,000-plus feet, they'll use it.

Idle cabins hide surprises

A fireplace that sits unused all summer is exactly where birds nest, wasps build, and leaves collect — and a guest lighting a blocked flue on a cold night is a bad way to find out. A pre-season sweep clears it: we seal the firebox, vacuum at the hearth with a sealed HEPA system, brush the flue and connector, and check that the cap screen is sound so wildlife stays out. For a rental, that's not just cleaning, it's protecting the booking and the house — a clogged chimney found by a guest is a canceled stay and a bad review.

Propane and altitude

Maggie Valley is propane-only — no natural-gas main runs up here — so the sealed gas units in these cabins get an annual service and a vent check rather than a wood-style sweep, with the burner, venting, and propane connections gone over. Propane burns hotter per unit than natural gas and needs the right orifices and pressure, so a botched setup soots a flue fast, another thing we check. The wood-burners get the full brush. At better than 3,000 feet this is one of the coldest communities we serve, and once a fire's lit it runs hard.
