What does a chimney sweep actually do during a cleaning?
In Marshall, the challenge of a sweep is often just reaching the flue: homes cling to steep hillsides with tight access, and the revitalized downtown buildings run tall and narrow against the mountainside. We bring the tools and rigging to sweep those hard-to-reach chimneys properly — brushing the liner top to bottom, clearing the smoke shelf, and vacuuming it clean.
Steep lots, tall flues
A chimney is only as clean as the sweep can reach, and Marshall's terrain makes that the whole game. Hillside homes with limited access and multi-story downtown buildings built into the slope put fireboxes and roofs where a careless crew cuts corners. We don't. We seal the firebox, run a sealed HEPA vacuum at the hearth, and brush the flue its full height with rods sized to your liner, whether that means working from the hearth up or the cap down. On these lots, safe roof access is half the job — and a sweep that skips the top of the flue isn't a sweep.
Gorge air and draft
The French Broad gorge funnels cool, damp evening air through Marshall, and tight mountainside lots hemmed in by rising ground complicate draft — cold air can sit in a chimney like a plug and push smoke back into the room. A sweep clears the physical blockage; if draft is still poor after, that points to flue sizing or a cap issue we can diagnose. Damp gorge air also rusts dampers and caps, so those get a look while we work.
