What is a see-through gas log set?
A see-through gas log set is a gas log set built to look good from both sides of a double-sided masonry fireplace — the logs are arranged and finished so there's no ugly 'back,' and the flame reads well through either opening. Like all vented log sets, it's decorative-first: a beautiful, realistic flame, damper open, with most of the heat going up the chimney.
Logs made to be seen from both sides
In a see-through masonry fireplace open to two rooms, an ordinary gas log set would show its unfinished back to one of them. A see-through set solves that: the logs are cast and stacked to look natural from either face, and the burner lays the flame out so it fills the view both ways rather than looking right from one room and wrong from the other. Vented logs give you that tall, realistic yellow flame — the closest gas comes to a real wood fire — but they run with the damper open, so most of the warmth goes straight up the chimney. In a see-through fireplace that's open to two rooms, you're really buying the look and the connection between the spaces, not a serious heat source for either one. If heat is the actual goal, a sealed see-through gas fireplace — which keeps both views while sealing the combustion for real, efficient warmth — is the better tool, and we'll say so.
What it needs to run right
Every gas log set needs a licensed gas line, and that's our lane — in North Carolina, connecting a log set to fuel is licensed work, so we permit and pressure-test the line we run. A see-through set also needs proper draft through both openings and a damper clamp to keep the flue safely open while it burns, and we confirm the firebox and chimney draft correctly before we ever light it.
