What is an indoor/outdoor see-through fireplace?
An indoor/outdoor see-through fireplace is a double-sided unit built into an exterior wall — one glass face opens to a room inside, the other to a covered porch or patio outside. One fireplace warms and shows from both, blurring the line between your living room and the outdoors. It has to be a unit specifically rated for that indoor/outdoor exposure.
The best of inside and out
This is a see-through fireplace set into the wall between your home and a covered outdoor living area. Sit inside on a cold night and enjoy the fire; step out onto the porch on a cool mountain evening and the same fire is right there waiting. Why the unit has to be built for it
You can't simply point a standard indoor see-through at the weather and hope for the best. The outdoor face is exposed to temperature swings, wind, and moisture, so a true indoor/outdoor unit uses weather-rated materials, stainless components, and construction listed specifically for that split exposure. The exterior side has to shed water and stand up to the downdrafts that roll off our ridges and tall trees, and the venting and clearances have to satisfy the inspector on both the indoor and the outdoor sides of the wall. Put the wrong appliance in — an indoor-only unit pressed into outdoor duty — and you're inviting corrosion, draft trouble, and a failed inspection.
