What is fire glass?
Fire glass is tempered, tumbled glass made to sit over a gas burner in place of ceramic logs. Heat-rated so it won't melt, pop, or discolor, it glows and reflects the flame for a clean, modern look. You'll see it in gas fireplaces, inserts, and fire pits — the contemporary alternative to ceramic logs.
What it actually is
Fire glass is small pieces of specially manufactured tempered glass — tumbled smooth or left in reflective chunks — engineered to withstand direct flame without cracking, popping, or releasing fumes. It's not the same as landscaping glass or broken bottles; ordinary glass shatters and can throw shards when it heats. Real fire glass is rated for the temperatures a gas burner puts out and holds its color and shape for years.
Where it shines
We install it most often in linear gas fireplaces and gas fire pits, where the goal is a clean, jewel-like bed of flame instead of a traditional log look. It comes in reflective, non-reflective (matte), and luster finishes — the reflective pieces bounce the flame and read as more sparkle, which suits modern great rooms and the mountain-modern builds around Cashiers and Lake Toxaway. In a fire pit on a cool Asheville evening it catches light beautifully after dark.
One important caveat
Media isn't universally swappable. A sealed direct-vent gas fireplace is tested and certified with a specific burner and media set — you can't just pour glass into any firebox. Fire glass belongs in units and burners built or approved for it, and the amount and placement affect how cleanly the burner runs. That's why we spec the media with the appliance rather than treating it as an afterthought.
