For most homeowners, most evenings, the thermostatic remote is the control that makes a gas fireplace earn its place, and it's the one we set up most often.

The wall switch: boring and bulletproof

Nothing to lose in the couch cushions, no batteries in a junk drawer, nothing to pair. On a millivolt unit like the Valor H5, a simple wall switch has one more virtue that matters in these mountains: the whole system runs on the pilot's own tiny voltage, so it lights when the grid is down. Plenty of Helene stories around here ended with "we flipped the switch and the fireplace just worked." For an elderly parent's house or a mountain cabin, simple is a feature, not a compromise.

Smart control: nice, with an asterisk

App-based systems — IntelliFire Touch on the Majestic Meridian, IntelliFire on Heat & Glo and Heatilator units — add phone control, scheduling, and thermostatic operation from anywhere in the house. If you love waking the great room up warm before you come downstairs, it's genuinely pleasant to live with.
