Which gas fireplace features are actually worth paying for?

Start with the outage test

Ignition that survives a power cut is the most valuable feature sold in this region, full stop. After Helene left parts of WNC dark for days, the homes that stayed warm had hearths that didn't need the grid. That means millivolt ignition — the Valor H5 has no blower and no circuit board at all — or electronic ignition with battery backup, which Napoleon builds in. If a unit you're considering goes dead when the power does, in these mountains that's a real strike against it.

Pay for heat you can actually live with

A blower is worth it in most rooms — it moves heat off the firebox and into the space instead of letting it pool at the ceiling. A modulating flame is quietly the most-used feature we install: the H5 turns down from 24,000 BTU to 9,000, which means you can run the fire on a mild October evening without roasting yourself out of the room. And a thermostatic remote turns the fireplace into an appliance that holds a temperature rather than a flame you babysit.

Then there's the feature disguised as decoration: the log set. Napoleon's PHAZER logs and Mendota's hand-cast ceramic-fiber logs are the difference between a fire you glance at and one you stare into. You'll look at this flame for twenty years — realism is worth real money.

Where we'd tell you to save

Accent lighting, exotic media options, and modes you'll toggle once are taste, not function — fine if you love them, skippable if you're stretching the budget toward a better firebox. One situational exception: cool-wall technology like the Heat & Glo Cosmo 42's matters a lot if you're mounting a TV above the fireplace, and not at all if you aren't.
