What's the difference between a natural gas and a propane fireplace?

In Flat Rock, the fuel is usually natural gas, but the interesting question is the fireplace it feeds. Many homes here date to the 1800s, built with oversized open masonry fireplaces and clay flue liners that are now well past their prime — so most of our Flat Rock work is fitting a sealed gas insert into that historic brick, on the natural-gas line that already serves the property.

Historic fireboxes that pull cold air in

Those grand old open hearths look wonderful and heat terribly — an open masonry fireplace can actually run a net heat loss, drawing warm room air up an oversized flue and pulling cold drafts back in around it. A sealed gas insert fixes the draftiness while preserving the mantel and stonework you bought the house for. Aging clay liners are the other concern: rather than reline a marginal flue for open burning, a direct-vent insert seals its own path and leaves the old chimney out of the equation.

Natural gas on the Henderson County mains

Historic Flat Rock, Kanuga, and Highland Lake are largely on the natural-gas main, so there's no tank to manage — we tie the new insert into your house line or extend from the meter. The result is period character on the outside and a modern, controllable, sealed heater on the inside.

Preserving the home, permitting the work

Working in homes this old, permitted and pressure-tested gas is not optional — unpermitted hearth work can void insurance on exactly the kind of property that's hardest to replace. We pull the Henderson County permit and meet the inspector. Flat Rock is about 30 minutes south of our Asheville showroom. Call (828) 545-0525 for a free in-home assessment.
