What size gas line does a gas fireplace need?

In Mills River, the biggest gas-line question is often outdoors: a fire pit like a 60,000-BTU Uptown draws far more fuel than an indoor fireplace, and on these large rural lots the line runs a long way to the patio. That combination of high demand and distance is exactly what pushes a run from 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch. We size, permit with Henderson County, and pressure-test.

Outdoor features are hungry — and far from the source

Mills River's open valley is made for outdoor living, and a gas fire pit or patio heater is a much bigger draw than most people expect — a 60,000-BTU pit can demand more than two indoor fireplaces combined. Out here the fuel source is usually a long way off: a meter at the house or, on the many propane properties, a tank set back across a big lot. Run that hungry appliance to the far edge of a patio and 1/2-inch pipe won't keep it burning full, so we size the buried, outdoor-rated line up accordingly.

Propane or gas, and plan it before entertaining season

Many Mills River homes are on propane rather than a gas main, and LP sizes differently — low pressure off the tank regulator, its own orifices. We confirm your fuel, then size the run against the appliance's BTU demand, the full developed length, and anything already on the line. It's worth planning outdoor gas in late spring, before entertaining season, so the line is in the ground and pressure-tested before the first cool evening you want to use it.

Licensed, permitted, pressure-tested

An outdoor gas line still has to be run by a licensed gas contractor in North Carolina — a hardscaper can build a gorgeous patio, but they can't legally connect the fuel. We can, we permit with Henderson County, and we pressure-test every line, indoors or out. Mills River is about twenty-five minutes south of our showroom. Never DIY gas pipe. Call (828) 545-0525.
