What size gas log set will look proportional in my fireplace opening?
As a rule, pick a log set whose width runs about six inches narrower than the front of your opening — so a 30-inch-wide opening usually takes a 24-inch set. But the set also has to clear the firebox depth and the burner, so the safe answer is the size the manufacturer rates for your box, which we confirm on-site with a measurement.
The proportion rule of thumb
Fireboxes taper, so we measure four things: front width, back width, depth, and height. A set sized to leave a few inches of breathing room on each side and clearance up top looks natural and lets the flame thread through the logs the way it's designed to. Jam an oversized set in and it looks crowded, blocks the burner ports, and starts throwing soot — the opposite of the upgrade you wanted.
Vented vs ventless changes the math
A vented set — like a Real Fyre Charred American Oak — can run taller and fuller for that big decorative yellow flame, because the byproducts of combustion go up the open damper. A ventless set is different: it's limited by room size and BTU, includes an ODS safety shutoff, and has to match the firebox rating precisely. You don't oversize a ventless burner to fill a big opening; you size it to the room and the listing.
