What size wood stove do I need for my square footage?

In Weaverville, the fork is old house or new one. A tight, well-built Reems Creek home holds heat and sizes to the lower end of a stove's range — don't oversize a modern envelope. An older downtown home with an original masonry firebox leaks heat and wants the upper end. Same square footage, opposite answers.

New builds change the calculation

Weaverville's fast growth around Reems Creek means a lot of new construction — sealed, insulated, and code-built to hold heat far better than a house from the 1940s. In a home like that, the square-footage rating on the box tends to overstate the stove you need, because your heat loss is low. Sizing to the lower end of a range keeps the stove burning hot enough to stay clean, instead of leaving you with a big box you have to strangle every evening. Newer isn't a reason to go bigger; it's usually a reason to go a touch smaller.

The older downtown stock

Downtown Weaverville's older homes are the mirror image. Many still have original masonry fireboxes that were never efficient heaters, and the walls around them predate real insulation, so heat loss is high and the stove has to work harder. Those homes justify the upper end of a range or an insert that turns a drafty opening into a sealed, efficient heater. We carry EPA-certified Regency stoves and inserts and service Jotul, HearthStone, and Lopi. The north-facing valley here is also slow to warm in spring, which stretches the season you'll actually burn.

Buncombe permit, fifteen minutes north

Either way, a wood stove is permitted work — clearances, hearth pad, and a lined or Class A flue, inspected. We pull the Buncombe County permit and meet the inspector, and we're only about 15 minutes north of the Asheville showroom, so sizing it in person is easy. Call (828) 545-0525 or come see the stoves on the floor.
