Where should an outdoor fireplace go in my backyard layout?

In Asheville, the right spot depends on which Asheville you live in: behind a historic Montford or North Asheville home, an outdoor fireplace usually sits off the back where its stone can echo the original masonry; on newer South Asheville lots, a linear gas unit often anchors the far end of a level patio. Natural-gas reach and setbacks settle it.

Which Asheville is your backyard?

Placement changes with the housing stock. Behind the older masonry homes of Montford and North Asheville, the lots are tighter and the architecture is the star, so we tuck an outdoor fireplace off the back or along a side wall where its stone can pick up the original brick or fieldstone and read as though it was always there. West Asheville's bungalow yards often want a compact focal wall at the far edge of a small patio. On the newer South Asheville builds there's more room to work, and a clean-lined linear gas unit can anchor the far end of a level terrace, facing the seating so everyone shares the flame and the reflected heat.

Gas at the curb, but the run still counts

Asheville sits on natural-gas mains, so an outdoor fireplace here can usually tie into the same service that feeds the house rather than a propane tank. That's an advantage, but the distance from your meter to the fireplace still drives a real part of the job, so we site it within sensible reach of fuel. In North Carolina, running that buried, outdoor-rated line is licensed work — a mason or landscaper can build a beautiful surround but legally can't connect the fuel; we permit and pressure-test every line and meet the Buncombe County inspector. Our showroom is right here at 629 Emma Rd, so it's an easy trip to walk your yard. Elevation keeps our evenings cool into spring, so the fireplace earns its keep most of the year.
