Brevard, North Carolina

Which fireplace problems can I safely fix myself and which need a technician?

In Brevard, where 80-plus inches of rain a year cracks crowns, spalls brick, and rusts dampers, the safe-to-DIY tasks are mostly inspection: swap remote batteries, check the wall switch, confirm the shutoff, and look — from outside — at the vent cap. But moisture damage to a flue, damper, or gas connection isn't a homeowner fix; that's licensed, inspectable work for us.

Rain is the local failure mode

Brevard gets more rain than almost anywhere we serve, and it shows up in fireplaces. Crowns crack, brick spalls, dampers seize with rust, and crawl spaces and chimney chases stay damp enough to corrode metal you can't see. You can absolutely look — check whether the outside vent cap is clear, note rust streaks, watch for water stains — but diagnosing and repairing water intrusion means opening the flue or the appliance, and that's ours.

The everyday self-serve items still hold: batteries in the remote and receiver, a wall switch that's simply off, a gas shutoff valve turned across the line, glass cleaned once fully cool. None of those touch fuel or venting.

Propane country, Transylvania County permits

Much of Brevard and the cabins around it run on propane rather than a natural-gas main, so a unit that won't fire may just be low on fuel or have a closed tank valve. The regulator, the gas valve, the pilot, and any line — buried or indoor — are licensed gas work; a mason or handyman legally can't connect them in North Carolina, but we can, and we permit it with Transylvania County and pressure-test the line.

About 40 minutes southwest

We're roughly 40 minutes southwest of our Asheville showroom. Rust and water damage rarely fix themselves — if a damper won't move or a pilot won't hold, call (828) 545-0525, and if you ever smell sulfur, leave and call from outside.
