In a century-old Montford home, we more often set a sealed insert into the existing firebox rather than leave that drafty open masonry pulling heat up the chimney.
Natural gas, and what that means for your install
Asheville sits on natural-gas mains through much of the city, so most homes here run the Meridian on NG without a propane tank. Running or extending that gas line is licensed work in North Carolina — a furniture showroom or a mason can sell you a firebox, but they legally can't connect it to fuel. We can, and we pull the Buncombe County permit and meet the inspector on every line we run. At 2,134 feet the nights stay in the 20s well into spring, so a hearth with battery-backup or millivolt ignition keeps throwing heat when the power drops.
