Why does my direct-vent gas fireplace feel drafty when it's off?

That cool draft off an idle direct-vent fireplace is usually not outside air leaking in — it's air convecting inside the sealed unit. Cold air in the vent pipe cools the firebox and glass, and that chilled air sinks off the front, feeling like a draft. It's normal on a sealed system. Cold air actually entering the room, though, points to a surround or seal gap.

Sealed doesn't mean warm to the touch

A direct-vent fireplace draws combustion air and exhausts through a sealed coaxial pipe — the whole point is that room air and combustion air never mix, which is why it's safe in bedrooms and tight homes. But "sealed" doesn't mean insulated. When the unit's off, cold air from the vent termination sits in the outer pipe and chills the firebox and glass. Room air touching that cold glass cools, gets denser, and slides down off the front of the unit. You feel a draft, but it's your own room air circulating against a cold surface — not an outdoor leak. None of this means the sealed system is failing; a working direct-vent fireplace is doing exactly what it should when its cold glass cools nearby air.

When it's actually a leak

There's a real version of this worth ruling out. If you feel genuine cold air moving through — especially around the trim, louvers, or where an insert meets the old firebox — that can be a seal or surround gap letting outside air track in around the appliance rather than through it. On inserts, the gap between the unit and the masonry opening is the usual path. That's fixable with proper sealing, and it's worth doing because it's both a comfort and an efficiency loss.

What can help

A few things reduce the cold-glass effect: some models accept an optional sealed glass front or a heat-management setup, and confirming the vent termination is correct and unobstructed keeps things right. Mostly, though, a little cool-glass convection on a sub-freezing mountain night is just physics on a sealed unit.
