Why does my fireplace smoke only on windy days?

Right here in Asheville, wind rolling over our ridgelines and the mature trees in neighborhoods like Montford dives down the flue and briefly reverses your draft, pushing smoke into the room. It shows up most on older masonry chimneys that sit lower than the oaks around them. A wind-directional cap fixes most cases; a short flue may need added height.

Why Montford and North Asheville chimneys catch it

Our oldest neighborhoods — Montford, North Asheville, parts of West Asheville — were built with tall masonry chimneys that the trees have since outgrown. When a gust hits a canopy of hardwoods and the chimney sits below it, the wind spills down the flue instead of drawing cleanly past the top. That's the moment smoke rolls back over the damper and into the living room.

The height standard is worth checking: the flue should clear the roof by three feet and stand two feet over anything within ten. Around here that 'anything' is usually a mature oak or a neighbor's taller roofline, not your own roof — so a chimney that looked fine in 1920 loses the contest today.

The gas sidestep on the mains

Asheville sits on natural-gas mains through most of the city, which opens a permanent option: converting a wind-plagued open masonry fireplace to a sealed direct-vent gas unit. Sealed combustion pulls its air and vents its exhaust through the same coaxial pipe, so a downdraft has nothing to push into the room. It's routine in South Asheville's newer homes and satisfying in the old ones.

If you'd rather keep burning wood, the fix stays mechanical — a wind-directional or vacuum cap, and added height where the flue falls short. We're based right here at 629 Emma Rd, so an on-site look is easy to schedule. Call (828) 545-0525.
