Why does my fireplace smoke only on windy days?
Around Black Mountain and Montreat, the trees are the problem — heavily wooded, shaded lots mean your chimney is almost always shorter than the poplars and hemlocks around it, and wind spilling off them dives straight down the flue. Swannanoa Valley's cold-air inversions make it worse by weakening the draft on frosty mornings. A taller flue and a wind-directional cap are the usual answers.
When the forest is taller than your chimney
Montreat and the wooded slopes above Black Mountain keep houses cool and shaded — and put a lot of tall timber right next to the roofline. The height rule exists for exactly this: a flue needs to clear the roof by three feet and beat anything within ten feet by two. When a stand of eighty-foot trees sits fifteen feet off the house, the chimney is playing from behind, and every gust that tumbles over the canopy finds the flue.
The inversion twist
The Swannanoa Valley traps cold air, so mornings here run 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville and the flue starts each fire as a cold plug. A weak, cold draft has no reserve to fight a downdraft with, which is why the smoke-on-windy-days complaint spikes on those still-then-gusty frozen mornings. Priming the flue helps, but if the chimney is genuinely short for its wooded lot, added height is the fix that lasts.
